Basrur was one of the largest towns of Historic Tulunadu comprising modern districts of South Kanara and part of North Kanara Districts. Today it is a small panchayath area of Kundapura Taluk of Udupi District.
This is a land of fine art, music, sculpture and cottage industries. It was a famous port city on the southern bank of river Varahi. Merchant ships used to anchor in Basrur Port, pepper, rice and coconuts were exported even to Persia.
Schools were in existence in 19th Century. Initially they were called "Aigala Math". Where in education was imparted on Epics, Vedas, Gadugina Bharatha, Jaimini Bharath and even Yakshagana. In 1892 Christian Basel Mission have started United Basel Mission Church School at Basrur. In 1908 Hattiangady Late Srinivasa Kamath and Basrur Late Subbayya Shetty started Hindu Aided Primary School. These two institutions had a land mark achievement regarding imparting primary education to the masses.
Basrur is connected to other sub-villages like Hattikudru, Anagalli, Margoli, Merdy, Japthi, Kalanje, Othinane (Panakada-katte), Kolkere, Ulloor, Kandavara and Balkur to form a larger area.
